The memory of St Eudes tells us that God even now cares for his Church as he cared for the people of Israel. As he sent prophets to remind Israel about their duty to God, we find in time of need in the Church God sending saints to remind the Church about things that seems to have been forgotten. When there was so much social difference between the rich and the poor, God sent  St. Dominic  who was able to bring the two groups together and proclaim that in the sight of God we are all Children of God, that there should no difference between the poor and the rich.

When the Church became rich and poverty was forgotten God raised up St. Francis of Assisi to remind the believers that the Church of Christ is the Church of the poor.

When young boys were roaming the streets of Turin with no one to care for their material welfare nor their spiritual needs, God raised up St. John Bosco who provided them food, shelter and a good education along with instruction in the Catholic faith.

St. John Eudes (1601 – 1680) was born at a time when the Church in France was corrupt and in many ways a source of evil rather than good. There were the rich clergy who enjoyed all the privileges and the poor clergy deprived all privileges had to face untold difficulties to fulfil their duties as pastors of souls. The people, in general, were poor, superstitious and oppressed. To this was added Jansenism that taught that the body was evil and salvation practically unattainable.

In the face of such existing problems, St. Eudes set up Seminaries to educate the clergy and prepare them spiritually and intellectually to help the people to come out of their ignorance and superstition. This common training given to both the rich and poor also removed, in some way, the difference that existed among them.

Over and over again we find God’s grace acting through people like St. John Eudes. They do not stand outside and complain or run campaigns, they go in and do things, remove the mould of the worldly corruption and bring the Church back to what Christ wanted it to be.

We ought to pray for such leaders and saints even for our times too when there are so many Christian sects fighting one against other and giving the world a wrong impression of the Church that Jesus founded.

We spoke about the situation of the clergy in France at the time of St John Eudes, the corruption, ambition for worldly power (cardinals were leading the army in battle) disregard for and oppression  of the poor. Ezekiel complains about the corruption of the shepherds, religious leaders who were called by God to look after his sheep (the people of God.) But they were looking after themselves and neglecting the sheep. God was not happy with these shepherds. The Lord says this: “I am going to call the shepherds to account. I am going to take my flock back from them. I am going to look after my flock myself.”

Today’s first reading is an examination of conscience for those entrusted with the care of souls in the Church. To be a priest is an honour, priesthood gives one a lot of privileges. But these privileges are given not to make one’s life comfortable, but to care, with more dedication, for the welfare of the people entrusted to their care. “I must decrease, they must increase” and not the contrary.

God has entrusted us with care for the people. Can he trust us? In our position as pastors, what is our priority, the welfare of the people or our welfare?

In the daily Mass the priest and the people are able to witness the love of Christ for them. He becomes bread, food, for the people. Everyone taking part in the Mass is asked thus to become bread for others. Unless we are ready to give ourselves, our time and talents, our health and wealth for the welfare of others we will not become like Christ who gave himself totally as food for each one of us. If the Mass we hear daily can thus change us, it will make us saints.

The Gospel wants to tell us, that in the sight of God, it is not the amount we do that counts but the love with which we do even the smallest thing. We have different groups of people in the gospel, who began the work in the field some in the third hour others in sixth and the ninth hour. And finally, those who were called at the 11th hour. It is unthinkable for an owner of the fields to call someone at the 11th hour and pay him a full day’s wage, nay, no one will call workers at the 11th hour.

Those who were called third, sixth and ninth hour worked for the wage promised by the landowner. Those called in the 11th hour were grateful to the owner for calling them at that hour and they worked more out of love for the kind owner than for the wage they would get.  The Master paid the first three groups for the work they did, and he pays the last group for the love they showed.

We do a lot of work, how much of all these is done out of love for God? Aren’t we working for our advantage, for the money we get, for the praise we get, for the appreciation from people? Do we expect God to be generous with us when we are not generous toward him?  Let love for God be the motive behind every action you do, and you will experience his generosity, as did the people who came to work in the field at the 11th hour.

Harmutty too now under the Fury of Flash Flood

Harmutty convent under water on 14 August 2020

Harmutty 14 Aug: Don Bosco Harmutty had never experienced flood at any point of time, even when the whole of Assam experienced flood Harmutty  used to be spared. But today  on 14 August, from morning we began to experience unprecedented situation. Heavy shower started to pour in soon after the Holy mass in the morning ,when we came out the church we found  our campus full of water and began to  witness  a kind of deluge. Soon the call came from convent of Holy Cross sisters, informing us that their walls have fallen and campus was full water.  All around there was flood. Many houses, within short notice, got submerged. We guessed that the sudden deluge was caused by flash flood or cloud burst somewhere in Arunachal Hills. The small river could not taking in the huge flow of water and began to overflow the banks. The pressure was so much that the many walls could not with stand the pressure and gave in. Soon Harmutty that had not experience such a deluge in the past decades was getting submerged. Within two hours the water receded everything was once again back to normal. Now the collapsed walls lay low waiting to be raised. Indeed the year 2020, is very strange and freak.  Like everyone we too are waiting for this year to be over! (by Fr. Tious Varghese SDB)

EDUCATION IS A MATTER ALSO OF BAND WIDTH

Dimapur 11 August 2020: Fr. T.T. Joseph SDB, in-charge of the department of Education in Dimapur Province, convened a meeting of the members of the education board. The meeting was held on the digital platform of Google meet. The meeting began with the prayer led by Fr. Benny James SDB. Fr. T.T. Joseph welcomed the participants and emphasized the main objective of the meeting to focus on the activities of our schools in response to the corona virus pandemic. Fr. Jose Kuruvachira SDB, the Provincial of Dimapur Province addressed the board members and appreciated the initiative of coming together to discuss the various aspects of the growth of the schools in our province. The members present were Fr. Benny James, Fr. K.C. Vincent, Bro. Mathew K, Fr. Stephen Chazhasseril, Fr. Joshua Gangmei, Fr. Jose Thomas and Fr. Neljen. The representatives of each region presented the report of the activities organized in the schools in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The summery also highlighted the challenges faced by the schools during this lockdown period.

In response to school closures, many of our schools made use of distance learning programmes and open educational applications that schools and teachers can use to reach students remotely and limit the disruption of education. All the schools have organized meeting and training programmes for the teachers to begin the process of online classes. However as one of the participants said, much of online classes regulated by the bandwidth available in each area.

Some of the activities undertaken during this period include printing and distributing chapters of textbooks; broadcasting recorded videos through websites, portals, social media (school applications, WhatsApp and YouTube); making videos available via memory cards or audio lessons through the medium of mobile phones.

For students without access to technology or connectivity notebooks packed with learning resources that have been delivered to homes of these students by teachers. Other schools are using social media applications like parent app or WhatsApp, where teachers assign students with specific chapters to read and a set of questions to respond to. Students are required to answer the questions and send an image of their answers back to teachers to assess. Many schools have even organizing online examinations and class tests through Goggle form in order to create greater interest and keep them motivated in attending the regular online classes.

ECONOMIC IMPACT AND ENROLLMENT ISSUE

School closures affected not only students, teachers, and families, but have far- reaching economic consequences. The impact was most severe for disadvantaged children and their families, causing interrupted learning and consequent economic cost to families who could not work.

We are aware that many of our schools are in the remote areas and the people are poor and they are unable to pay the fees. Hence administration too is unable to pay complete salaries to teachers and staff during this lockdown though most of them have tried their best to pay the complete salary.

COVID-19 pandemic has also affected the enrollment of students in the school and it was reiterated by the Fr. Joshua while presenting the report of the region of Arunachal Pradesh.

PROBLEMS FACED

Shortage of finance to pay the teachers
Online classes are not effective in certain region
Most of the students are in the farm
Poor electricity and poor net work.
Most of the students do not have smart phone to attend online classes.

NEW EDUCATION POLICY

The board has also made the decision to organize a webinar in order to make all the headmasters and principals of Don Bosco Schools know the impact of the new Educational National Policy 22 August 2020.

The meeting was concluded with the observation made by Fr. Provincial appreciating the well prepared and comprehensive report presented by the different regions and exhorting the organizers to arrange similar meetings in the future. (by Fr. Neljen Antony SDB)

Humanity is Bigger

NAGA MOTHERS’ ASSOCIATION (NMA) and DON BOSCO YOUTH & EDUCATIONAL SERVICES (PROVINCE OF DIMAPUR) RESPOND TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Dimapur: The Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) is a prominent civil society organization formed by women in Nagaland. The organization has consistently tried to address problems of conflict, peace building and substance abuse by creating a platform for dialogue that brings together disparate voices. Ever since its establishment in 1984 in Kohima, NMA has consistently voiced their opinion against fratricidal killings, violence between different Naga outfits, and the Indian security forces. The NMA believes in a space of dialogue and consultation on contentious issues like tribal unity. Their peace building efforts and reconciliation are based on human dignity and value of life!
The novel Covid-19 pandemic is impacting the entire humanity as an unprecedented crisis that needs an extraordinary response and resilience. It is an unprecedented global crisis indeed! These unprecedented challenges call for concerted efforts and decisive actions. This novel Covid-19 has plunged the entire North East India too into a catastrophic situation with exodus of youths returning to their home states. The immediate health issues, sufficient food supply and sanitization of the quarantine centres became the top priorities. In Nagaland state, both the government agencies and civil organizations were not sufficiently prepared to face this pandemic.
It is against this background the idea of a joint venture by NMA and DBYES was thought of and executed it quite timely and successfully. We put our ideas, concerns, resources, and manpower together to respond to the problems and difficulties faced by the inmates of various quarantine centres and hospitals in different districts of Nagaland. In all our joint ventures we had a special attention to the returnees (Youths) from mainland cities en route to their respective villages. They were hit hard by this pandemic. Our Salesian intervention in this regard is particularly important as we have a great concern for migrant youths (workers) in our Salesian Youth Ministry.
The NMA and DBYES supplied food items to 5832 beneficiaries in 3 Quarantine Centres (Peren, Tuengsang, Oriental Theological Seminary) and 2 Covid-19 Hospitals (Chedema & Kohima). The food items consisted of Rice, dal, eggs, milk, sugar, tea leaves, biscuits, fruit juices, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, fish and chicken, etc.

In this joint venture, the NMA executives have played a vital important role. They contacted their unit executives and through them they contacted the civil authorities, village & tribe representatives and youth leaders to carry out the distribution of the food items. It is an important learning experience for everyone that we need the help and collaboration of all. Together we can do much and overcome the challenges and difficult circumstances we are facing today! (By Fr. Peter Salew SDB)

Nevertheless, he was fully involved and contributing to this department as he had taken a lot of video coverage of the news and views of the province through YouTube channel.

Among  the  many  topics  that  were  discussed;  the  following  are:

A great need to cover the actual situations and works of the various houses undergoing the Coronavirus pandemic and the flood situation in Assam, etc
Updating of Province website and digitization of the old house chronicle album photos. Getting a detailed history of the houses that have been established for a long time.Getting a full-fledged and dedicated social communications team of trained Salesians and experts, lay people and a proper infra structure.
Rev. Fr. Provincial asked Fr. Jonas if he could take online social communication course for clerics scattered around the province and the country.
To make available the published books and other achievement of confreres.

Writing biographies of certain eminent personalities…Bishop Kerketta, Bishop Abraham, Bishop P. K. George, etc.
The social communications team at present is depending hugely upon the province that is trying to manage during the COVID financial crisis. In this regard, Rev. Fr. Nazarius and adigital photo session by Fr. Benny James. Fr. Nazarius thanked everyone at the end of the meeting and thus the meeting was concluded. (Reported by Fr. Jossy Mathews SDB)

DB Green Alliance Kick Starts in Dimapur Province

Dimapur 3 August 2020: In pursuance of the directive from Fr. Jose Kuruvachira SDB, the Provincial of Dimapur Province, the Commission for Don Bosco Green Alliance under the leadership of Fr. Provincial himself, had the first on-line meeting on Monday 3rd August 2020. Fr. Provincial gave us a brief status and purpose of presentation and the commission itself. We would be taking forward the key topic “How to protect and preserve our planet” and taking the cue from the Church with the Pope, the Congregation with the Rector Major and the Salesian Provincial Conference South Asia (SPCSA). The group opted for joining with DB Green Alliance at world level. Coming under the Youth Ministry, the effort would be a seven-year journey.

It would need serious networking with all the stakeholders. It is to be looked at as a movement rather than a series of mere activities. Starting  with awareness to taking small steps, it would embrace the entire gamut of the present day living – mankind, earth-that-is-in-danger, climate, our role in climate change, nature, the type of living habits we cultivate and encourage, waste management, energy in all its forms, renewable and otherwise, conservation etc. “I want you to panic” (words of a 16 year old school-going girl, Greta Thunberg)  “Our house is a fire. How dare you to steal our future with empty promises.  No one is too small to make a difference. I want you to act now. …”

We would start the 7-year effort by drawing up achievable yearly programmes on a priority basis. All the members, (individually) took upon themselves to make a list of around 50 activities that could be undertaken, after careful scrutiny, checking the do-ability. The online meeting adjourned to meet again with the list of possible activites that could be carried out. (Reported by Fr. PX Andrew SDB)
