Every evening at the Oratory at Don Bosco Matunga (Mumbai), the kids play for a while before they study. I watch them as the captains choose their teams for basketball or cricket. The younger ones have their heads down and shuffle their feet as they hear the captains call the names of the older kids or the better players. Sometimes, a captain does not see an older or stronger player and calls the name of a younger kid. The joy on his/her face is a sight to behold. Human elections everywhere – whether in politics or business or sports – is the same. We choose the best.
The attitude and behaviour in human election is in sharp contrast to divine election: God’s choice of Israel (first reading) and Jesus’ choice of the apostles (Gospel). From the human perspective, God’s choice is strange: he chose a weak, landless, wandering nation as his own; Jesus chose those of limited education and means as his closest followers. God chose whom he wished and gave them the gifts they needed to accomplish their mission.
In the first reading, God makes Israel an offer at Sinai. They have already experienced his care for them in the exodus from Egypt. If they want to be God’s “special possession, dearer… than all other people,” they must freely consent to God’s choice of them. God does not want puppets but partners in mutual trust and for a mission. What is Israel’s mission? “You shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” Israel has the privilege of communicating God’s message to the rest of humankind and of reflecting his holiness.
In the Gospel, Jesus chooses and sets apart a group of ordinary people – fishermen, a tax collector, a teacher of the Law, a zealot – to be partners in his ministry. For what does Jesus call them? Jesus saw the harassed and helpless crowds and he was moved with compassion. And so, he called the twelve to be shepherds to care for the people and to be signs of God’s compassionate love. Further, he sent them to “the lost sheep of the house of Israel” to announce that the kingdom of God was near.

Despite the villagers’ courageous efforts to defend their homes throughout the day, negotiations between the residents and an attacking group failed, resulting in the destruction of the village between 5 pm and 5.30 pm. As the community grieves, prayers for peace in Manipur are requested.
In a heart-wrenching event, Khopibung Catholic Village in Imphal fell victim to a destructive fire last evening, leading to the displacement of 44 families. The village’s residents valiantly fought throughout the day to protect their homes, but their efforts proved futile when negotiations with the attacking group failed, resulting in the complete torching of the settlement between 5 pm and 5.30 pm.
This is a symbolic picture.
The fire not only caused immense damage to the houses but also destroyed significant structures within the village. Among the casualties was the Catholic Church, which held great religious and cultural significance. The church was originally constructed by Bishop Dennis during his tenure as the Parish Priest of Mary Immaculate Parish in Imphal. Additionally, a mobile tower was also engulfed by the flames, compounding the losses and disrupting communication services in the area.
Fortunately, women and children had been evacuated to safer locations before the incident occurred, ensuring their well-being and minimizing the risk of casualties among the most vulnerable members of the community.
Prior to the devastating fire, the village had already experienced heightened tensions. A clash had taken place earlier between volunteers from the village and others, exacerbating the fragile situation in the region.
The Gopibung Kuki village, where the incident occurred, is situated in the Senapati district of Manipur. It has a population of 298 individuals and consists of 45 households, according to the Census of India data. The village falls under the Sadar Hills West subdistrict, with Kangpokpi serving as the Community Development Block. The district headquarters, Senapati, is located 33 kilometers away from Gopibung.
As the affected residents of Khopibung Catholic Village grapple with the daunting task of rebuilding their lives, the community at large is urged to extend support, solidarity, and prayers during this difficult time. Authorities are actively investigating the incident and making efforts to provide immediate relief and assistance to the affected families.
The burning of Khopibung Catholic Village serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for peace and resolution in Manipur, as prayers for tranquillity and healing are requested from all.

Dimapur, 11 January 2023 : The Don Bosco Dimapur campus in Dimapur was hit by a sudden flash flood early this morning, leaving the entire area in a state of bewilderment and confusion. The alarming situation was captured in striking photographs taken by Fr. Daniel J, shedding light on the extent of campus submerged in flash flood. The incessant rainfall that began last night continued throughout the night, leading to a significant rise in water levels. The ground floor of the ANMA Integrated Development Association (AIDA) was severely flooded, necessitating the urgent evacuation of furniture and other materials to the first floor. Animals such as those housed in the cowshed and piggery were shifted from getting drowned in the flash flood. Residents living near the river, both from Nagaland and Assam, have been encroaching on the surrounding areas, leaving very little space for the excess water to disperse. Consequently, the volume of water that accumulated could not pass through the narrow stream, leading to the flash flood that affected the Don Bosco School campus. Reacting to the situation, one of the school’s former principals took to social media, tweeting, “Staff and students will be happy to get a holiday tomorrow.” While the statement carried a light-hearted tone, it underlined the impact of the flood on the regular functioning of the school. The floodwaters also entered the ground floor of AIDA, causing significant damage and forcing the relocation of various items to the first floor. Efforts are currently underway to shift belongings and mitigate further harm to the property. The Don Bosco School community is now grappling with the aftermath of the flash flood. Authorities and staff members are working diligently to assess the damage and develop a plan for recovery. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need for better management of water resources in the region to prevent such incidents in the future. As the clean-up and recovery efforts continue, the entire community is urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions in the face of unpredictable weather patterns. The Don Bosco School administration is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as the situation progresses. (IND Province Correspondence)
